  • Training a Kiwi

I have a one year old kiwi planted at the end of our pergola. It is planted into a bottomless wooden planter so probably has its roots in wet clay.

Last year I let all the stems do their own thing - this year should I just keep cutting out everything except the stems I need for shape and does it fruit on this years or last years wood?

And will it take over the World whatever I do?

The plan is for it to go over the top and meet up with a grapevine, plus go along the side as a new house is being built along the boundary (behind the camera in P3) and we'd like some privacy on the deck. And shade!

Well I bluddy hope so! I'm counting on it doing that!

In our soil conditions it needs to be that sort of plant or it's a waste of money.

Yes, Plot 10 I originally thought - No! You can't teach a Kiwi to do anything unless they want to! But that would be a very aussie thing to say about our pacific cousins............

Funny I thought that too despite being a gardening forum. Or else a New Zealander.
