apricot bought

we have been down in england on a visit and the other day we went to a shop called "the range" and found a very healthy looking early moorpark apricot tree,it does say on the label that it will grow to 10ft,but i will be training it at a much shorter height and putting it in a big pot,this will allow me to put it in the spare greenhouse thru the winter,as the weather in scotland in the winter is what damages these plants,the constant wet weather seems to destroy them,it is carrying two main branches (equal) so i shall be shortening them to encourage branching for this year at least,but after looking in all the usual stores for one for ages,to pick this up for £6.99 and it has a really good root mass, i think we will be okay with this one,if summer ever comes,rang home the other day to find that its warmer up there,mad weather conditions again,watched all the floods last year on tv,we just got our usual summer rain(its warmer than the winter rain)though sometimes its hard to tell,but that seems to be all the uk now....

well,we are off home tomorrow,just a 350mile trip up to the northen wastes,the still-packaged tree seems fine but i will put it into water asap on arrival,OH says there must be a easier way of getting trees than doing these distances but it is a very healthy looking plant,so fingers crossed we have no silliness happening on the motorway and have a good run....and it seems the weather is slightly warmer there at present,but that may change,again......

good luck with your apricot tree i hope you all arrived home safely, i have ordered one and it should be here soon looking forward to growing my first tree.

Ok there are 3 things here;

1. You have a spare greenhouse?

2. I wish I had even more space under cover 'cause there are sooo many things I'd love to get and every time I read a thread like this I want one more thing.

3. I've got a big container in the polytunnel I'm going to plant some sort of dwarf fruit tree in, I'm thinking of doing the same at the back of the greenhouse in the tallest space which is about 7' or 8'

I don't have any space left outside really, I have 16 fruit and nut trees down the back and 27 trees in total planted about the garden.

I probably have about the same number and many of mine are big old standard apples or oaks, ashes etc. - and my garden is a lot smaller than yours. I thought I'd reached saturation point but I've just planted an apricot, greengage, 2 apples and a peach tree. Its surprising what you can fit in if you want to

Maybe I'm leaving too much space between my trees,I suppose I could fit a few more in at the very bottom along the stream/drain. The more the merrier for me, I love trees and would love to cover the entire front lawn in them but my wife says no.

we are all short of space when we want to plant fruit trees,we have 8 apple,4 pear 2 plum,1 greengage,1 cherry and 6 goosegogs,12 blackcurrant with24 raspberries in the front garden(its like a victorian walled garden but alas not too big,about 60 x65ft),and that includes the long drive and veg patch,we only have a courtyard in the back that used to be the stables,so the old chook house became the new g/house,to hold the fig,peach and now apricot,there will be 22 assorted pepper plants to go in there when ready,so its all improving,unlike the weather....

now dusting the peach flowers each morning to ensure pollination,and the apricot has now started to show buds,i hope this is a sign warmer weather is finally about to appear...
