Too late for fruit trees

I was hoping to put in some fruit trees but found out this should really already have been done in the winter/spring. I cant recall anyone telling me this was the time to plant an orchard! Nor do I recall any advice on pollinating triploid apple trees. Could this be the subject of an article perhaps with links to nurseries. Here in The Far North local garden centres are very thin on the ground and the variety of trees is well down to about three!

I am amazed that more advice is not given on pollination such as "bundling" pollination partners together!

Hello Caithness Gardener.
Am around so thought I would throw in a pence or two.
I've seen some fruit trees for sale at some places like Hilliers altho they are selling out fast. Its still springish so i don't see why not. Its probably been growing at the shop instead of your garden. Just take care of the roots etc.
I must admit, its all guess work, all my bushes and tree are already in, but like I said I don't see why not.
Also with the two varities together, I agree Trees etc should come with advice. I Have found Ken Muir to be quite useful for information. i think you need self fertile trees that don't require another one to fertilise it.

You can plant pot grown fruit trees at any time of year.

With all this rain were having, now is probably a good time to put fruit trees in the ground and you don't want your young tree to waste it's energy producing fuit. Plant now and it will have a whole twelve months to think about it.
