Does anyone know if redcurrants are later to get started then other fruit bushes?
My gooseberry, blackcurrant, blackberries/raspberries, etc have all got leaves on now but my redcurrant seems to be stuck at the bud stage. I did pull one bud apart and it seemed to be healthy underneath, it just isnt developing any further. Could it be a problem or are they just late starters?

Last year was my first year with fruit bushes. But I was lucky to get some established plants from a neighbour who was giving up his plot. I definately noticed the same thing with the red currants I have. They looked like dead and dry sticks for ages but then BOOM burst into life, a good few weeks after the blackcurrants and raspberries. They'll be fine, especially since you see green when you looked in the bud. You could also nick a bit of a branch with a sharp knife. If you see green then it's fine and leave it be

I agree with redser. I wouldn't worry. I've always found my redcurrants take at least a couple of weeks longer than either gooseberries or blackcurrants for the buds to burst and the leaves to start expanding.

Could you give examples?

We've got loads of red currants at work, all different varieties, and they all seem to fruit at the same time.

"Erstling aus Vierlander" fruits end of June, it's the first in red currant in my garden, "Jonkheer van Tets" ripens about the same time. Most of the other currants ripen mid-july, but 'August' ripens in august

Jonkeer Van Tets is an early one that's quite popular, as is Rovada, which is a late ripener, about a month later. Rovada is the one most supermarkets sell.

Not here they're not. Got 1 in full leaf with tiny flower buds which will open over the next 2 weeks, 1 just getting it's leaves and one thinking about waking up this year. All different varieties but lost the tags years ago.
