  • which fruit trees to get?

    Hi

My wife and kids have been wanting me to put in a mini orchard but i don't want them getting to tall. Found what looks like a good deal here http://www.urban-allotments.com/Frui...S/default.html any suggestions on varieties and general advice on planting.

I have a large area at the bottom, about 10m x 20m, how many will i need to cover to give me a mini orchard, how far apart should they be?

I live in Surrey, and the soil is good.

    Thanks in advance.

    The possibilities are endless.

I wonder if the mods could move this thread tocfeeling fruity?

Have a look at a few sites like ashridge, keepers or blackmoor who have lots of choice.

Also you might want to choose a specific root stock which will save you lots of pruning as the type of rootstock helpscto control the size of the tree.

I'm sure someone will be able to give you some more in depth information or advice.

The most important information from you is 'What do you like to eat?' Homegrown fruit will probably be different varieties than the imported ones in supermarkets but it will give us an idea what to suggest.

Its getting very late to plant bare-rooted trees now though the weather this spring has extended the planting season - you might have to buy container grown trees or it may be best to wait till autumn.

My advice would be not to choose by price alone - good fruit trees could last for fifty years so buy the best.
