  • Kiwi failing to thrive

    Hi there

I planted a kiwi about 18 months ago (oct '11). Since then it has almost doubled in size. It has now grown its leaves for spring but they are looking a bit yellow, specially around the edges.

I probably wouldn't have thought much about the amount it has grown except I bought one for my dad at the same time which is now twice the size! He only lives a few miles away so I didn't think the soil would be that different.

Mine is planted against a stone wall which is west facing and gets a fair bit of direct sun. The soil is chalky and we put some manure on it a couple of weeks ago.

Is there any other fertiliser that might help? Any advice would be really useful.

    Many thanks

    Samara

It could be a bit dry up against a wall. Try a liquid feed high in nitrogen to try and green up the leaves a bit.

Microclimates will affect plants, as well as location. As RL says, the wall could be casting a rain shadow.

It might be more prone to windy conditions or cooler where you have yours. The other could be in more sun etc.

Mine is only just starting to leaf up too.

I've been wondering whether nitrogen might help. I will give it a try. Thank you.
