well today I put up 50m of windbreaking material up as the wind was burning everthing, despite the canes being planted next to wall which i thought would give shelter, even my broadies look ragged but i put some pallettes around them last week and already they are sarting to flower, breeze breakers really make a difference!

They are autumn im fairly sure, need to double check, but today i noticed they are trying to flower, as they are young, should i pinch of the flowers to stop them producing fruit oor?

Since I have 5 canes, I am going to let one fruit, just because I really want to try a homegrown one

I guess I just expected them to bloom and be all covered in foliage by now (saying that, its my 1st year ever doing them so i have no clue what to expect). The weather this year is defo no helping!

My recently planted autumn raspberries are sending up small new shoots from the base. The established summer raspberries are all green and flowering. Check what you have as they are treated differently.

My well established rasps are hardly growing - it's been so cold.

So patience is required I am afraid.

I planted 24 bare rooted raspberry canes, 6 canes of 4 varities autum last year. All but one cane are now showing signs of growth, no raspberries planted before.

            Hello all
I have the very same problem. I bought Glen Lyon and Octavia from a local GC in March, planted them along with two other varieties and some brought from a previous garden.
All bar the two varieties named are sprouting, both from the base or on the cane itself.
The Glen Lyon and Octavia are just sticks in the soil. I have been back to the GC, who say wait until next year. I had a look at the stock they have left, some is sprouting nicely, but they also have others with no signs of life at all. The plants are in sunny sheltered spot, Strawberries are already fruiting!
Hoping the wait and see course of action advised bares fruit.

My raspberries are sending up shoots everywhere. One part has fruit that's just pink at the moment so I don't know if I'll get any more fruit this year.

I have nothing either. I split 16 canes between myself and Aunty tish, and they were a continuity cropper collection. I have eight wooden sticks that do appear to have rooted, but display no green foliage

My raspberry is quite active this year. It's in a bucket so that may explain why its really rather small but it is already thinking about flowering. I'm sure it was much later last year.

I planted six glen prosen canes last year. Only two have shoots, unfortunately on opposite sides of the bed, leaving four lonely sticks. I have had root around and although the sticks seem firm in the ground, there's no signs of life in them. My OH wants to pull them up and plant something else in the space this year and hope that the other two send out some suckers which can be transplanted.

Is there any chance they are just late developers, or should I consign them to the compost bin?

Mine are still nothing more than rooted brown sticks. I planted mine last year too

                        Be patient young raspberry growers!
Some types I've stuck in the ground in January and had canes fly up over the next few months, but most don't I've found over the years (and there's been a lot of years!) The dead looking twig you stuck in, stays a dead looking twig I find, and doesn't mean it's not busy underground.
Year 2 is where you will get the new canes, and even then I've sometimes only had a few.
Year 3 you'll be giving them away and year 4 you'll be cursing the fact that you stuck so many in to start with.

Give them a good general feed at the start of spring and mulch well, they don't want to dry out as they have shallow roots.
If you have no canes in the 2nd year a high nitrogen fertiliser will get them growing.

Eventually ended up with 9 out of the 11 raspberry canes "coming to life"!

I have 4 long established raspberry runs.

After this winter two had sections where no growth was evident.. right through to June. Now the weather has warmed up - a little - they are now shooting and starting to flower. So patience is sometimes needed - but never seen it as bad as this year.

Judging by the flowers etc, rest should have a great crop.

It's ruined part of my Rock Dust test - one of the affected sections had been RD treated! :-(
