I feed my old blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes every year (usually Feb-March), each with a couple of buckets of compost and a few handfuls of wood ash from my stove, around their base. Whether this is necessary I'm not sure, as I haven't done a comparison with unfed bushes. But they've yielded pretty well for 15 years. Potassium is always said to be the key nutrient for flowering. However, annual pruning of the bushes, to ensure a sustainable supply of new wood, is probably at least as important.
