  • Strawbs

    Hi All,

Hope someone can help. I have just subscribed to the list after reading about it in Grow Your Own, where I also read that you should take off the early flowers of strawberries. Is this right? I have just planted 9 plants grown from runners last year, the parent plants having few fruits, and they are romping away and bearing flowers. It seems odd to have to take the flowers off....

    Thanks for any advice.

Have never taken any flowers off strawberry plants, the only thing I cut off are the ripened fruits and then after they've fruited I cut all the leaves back to the crown and then keep any unwanted runners off afterwards.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hello Aravyn and welcome to the Vine. I think the advice about taking the flowers off relates to plants grown from seed in their first year. Since yours are more mature plants grown from runners I would leave the flowers alone and look forward to the strawberries.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

With last year's runners you're ok to chomp away! Welcome to the vine. A mad lot but very generous with their help, I've found.

Hello and welcome to the vine. Enjoy your strawberries - something munched all my plants except one over the winter
