Lemon tree question.......

I bought a lemon tree from Aldi in March 2012, didn't pay the full price, think I got it for £6.99 as it had lost some leaves so I bought it as a challenge.

Anyway, it lost all of the leaves over winter and has grown a couple of new small branches over the last few months.

The strange thing is the leaves are a totally different shape than the old ones.

They were the shape of lemon leaves, but the new ones look a bit like the shape of grapefruit leaves.

They smell like citrus but not as strong as the old shaped leaves which were very lemony and wide, these are a lot narrower.

The leave is small near the stem then narrows and comes out larger at the end, a bit like two leaves joined together.

So the label says lemon but could it be a grapefruit and if so why were the original leaves a completely different shape than the new ones!

My Aldi lemon also lost all of its leaves 2 yrs ago when I over watered it. The leaves that grew back are the same shape as yours but they are from the rootstock. The lemon tree grafted on top of mine has not sprouted any leaves since.
I think Starloc mentioned what they are grafted onto in one of his old posts but I can't remember what it was. Maybe something ornamental?

Tut! Never mind, I have 4 little lemon plants that I have grown form seed, but they are only about 3" tall so quite a way to go before they get to a decent size I suppose.
