  • problem with pear tree

i was wondering if anyone has any advice, weve started to notice black tips to some leave on our pear tree. Some of them even look like lines cut into the leave. Any idea what this is/could be as its the 1st year our pear tree seems to be doing well (its only a young tree) & we dont want it to be ruined.

    Many thanks
    Kerry

Photos would help Kerry. Also, where is the tree? Pot or ground?

As above: pictures are really helpful.

My guess is it's the particularly cold weather this year - pears originate from Southern Europe and prefer a sunnier and milder climate than the UK offers.
Other possibilities are scab - if it's a well-known variety they can be prone to scab.
There's a small chance of fireblight, but this disease requires warm wet spring weather (and it's certainly not been warm here in recent weeks!).

Could be a bit of wind damage, given the recent windy weather. The tips and margins of young expanding leaves are the most sensitive to this - they are often the thinnest areas of the leaf, furthest from the supply of water coming into the leaf and therefore most sensitive to the drying effects of the wind. This leads to localised death of tissue and it turns/brown/black.

As BttS suggested: it looks like damage from cold, wet, windy weather.
