we had loads of trouble with our braeburn clone, and in the end i chopped off the tree from 12ins height, but, the graft was at 18ins,so i will need to graft on a new variety next spring,
1/ what would be the best bet for this wet area?,given i have a well producing james grieve.
2/when should i order two new scions ? from where? and when would be best time,as this will be my first attempt at serious grafting?,i have been onto the internet sites that show how but i want to get it right, and i want apples that have a taste, our egremont russet gives us loads of flavour but i would like to graft something different..

i forgot to say,the new tree would be grown as a W espalier as it is along the side of the drive,if that makes any difference....

My happiest-looking apple trees in the last 18months of cold, wet, sunless weather have been:

      Ashmead's Kernel
      Belle de Boskoop
      Crawley Beauty
      Gravenstein
      Jupiter

All have grown - and are currently growing - normally and have been disease-free. Most are triploids and fairly vigorous.

      Others I'd throw-in for consideration:

      Alfriston
      Annie Elizabeth
      Beauty of Bath
      Blenheim Orange
      Duke of Devonshire
      Early Victoria (Emneth)
      Falstaff
      Gladstone
      Grenadier
      Hambledon Deux Ans
      Irish Peach
      Katy
      Newton Wonder
      Reverend Wilks
      Ribston Pippin
      Scotch Bridget
      Scrumptious
      Tower of Glamis
      Tydeman's Early Worcester

Scionwood would need to be transported to you dormant, in winter, unless you can meet face-to-face with someone to exchange scionwood in the summer for bud-grafting the same day.

thanks FB ,for all that information, you have given me so many to select from,i really cant thank you enough, now comes the hard bit, picking just one,or maybe two,try a duo tree,or is that family tree....many thanks, come winter i will start looking for the scions.i looked on the net and an american site(some farm name,i cant remember) but he went through the different grafts, showed it done, and kept it all in plain english...great..as my (from seed, john downie) crab apple bonsai is now fruiting,do i now count that as a pollinator? possibly mobile?move it round to each tree (about 12),could start a small business as "pollinators are go",and we seem to have loads of bees in the last few weeks so hoping for a better summer,or at least no worse..thanks again..
