Pepino melon

Hi all,

Recently bought one of these plants from Lidl. Just wondering if anyone has any tips for growing them successfully, as the packaging was of no help whatsoever?! Are they best grown under glass, or OK outside? And what do they taste like?

Bought one too yesterday. Looking through info online the taste a bit like a rockmelon or between a melon and cucumber.
Sadly looking on this site people in the uk don't seem to have been too successful.
It likes full sun and plenty of water and can grow 1-2metres, they can be grown on a support or trellis.
They are related to the tomatoe and aubergine family and need to be well fed with tomatoe feed.

I saw one in ours, but it said on the label that it wasn't edible, so I didn't buy it! doh

If anyone wants to try one, morrisons sells them. Pick the yellow colour ones that's the colour of the ripe ones. They are quite pleasant taste, like a mellow melon with cucumber mix in.

We had few plants grown from seeds, they flowered but never set any fruit, they needed to be hand pollinated. Indoor plant more then outdoor.

Thanks for your replies. I've currently got the plant in a sunny sheltered place next to the shed, until my new greenhouse gets built. Will be getting my paintbrush out for pollinating...and let you know how I get on!

I know this thread is old, but just in case you're interested.... I ordered some pepino seeds off ebay a few years ago. I managed to get a few of them to germinate, and I now have one growing on my office window sill. It has flowered for the last couple of summers (pale purple flowers) and last summer I got three small fruit about the size of golfballs (i use the paintbrush). Sadly they didn't fully ripen, but then my office window doesn't get much sun. This year I'll try it in my new greenhouse....
