  • Goose-gog Query.

Evening all. I have a three/four year old gooseberry bush of unknown species which has always produced a very good crop.
This year, although having had the same pruning and feeding regime as it's always had, I have absolutely no sign of any fruit/flowers!
The foliage looks great and there are no signs of any problem, but I'm sure there were definite signs of a crop by this time last year.
Am I just getting my underwear in a knot over nothing - is it just that EVERYTHING is late this year?

Funny you should say this but I haven't any flowers on my goosegog bush either. Only noticed it today. Lush green foliage. All the other sorts of fruit bushes are doing well with obvious fruit

Yes! My blackcurrant is obviously on target for a great crop and for the first time I also appear to have a good red currant crop on the way. Do you think flowers could have been destroyed by last frosts? Surely the lush young leaves would also show signs of damage if that were the case?

I inherited a gooseberry bush with my new plot and it's looking ok. Quite A bit of fruit developing. Still quite small, maybe 8mm diameter swelling. I'm in Staffs. Don't know I this helps solve your mystery?

That was another option I thought of, Bins, but I'd have thought the leaves would have been affected too if it it was bud damage. Oh well, looks like I'll just have to wait and see...and there's always next year.

Thought you didn't get birds in your garden any more Joanne.

I now have 2 blackbirds using the birdtable still cant get any smaller birds on my feeder. But it seems that my teenage neighbour has had the pellet gun taken off him so he cant shoot at the birds anymore. He has now started setting thing on fire in the garden as a new hobby

Nice neighbours! I'm glad I don't live in your house.

Blackbirds won't eat your sawfly caterpillars though. Sparrows and bluetits might.

If you put a heavy stone on the branch to keep it in contact with the ground it will probably root itself.
