Single Cordon Trained Fruit Bushes

Hi

I have just been fortunate enough to be allocated a second allotment from our local council however it is only quite small.

I would like to introduce red and white currants and also gooseberries along one fence but am unsure how far from the fence they should be planted, and being single cordon how far apart from each other they should be.

Could anyone give any pointers?

I'm not a cordon grower myself, but I've seen a figure of 12 inches for spacing between gooseberry 'single' cordons, and many books tell you to treat red and white currants in the same way as gooseberries. As to minimum distance from a fence, I'd be tempted to say 12 inches. Erring on the generous side is going to be beneficial from the standpoint of light interception and probably also soil moisture.

I've found that when 'bush trained' gooseberry foliage is pressed up against a fence or wall, because I've planted too close, it tends to be visited by snails, shoots are bent/distorted, plus berries can be rubbed/damaged.

Any reason you are so set on single cordons? I would go for fan training - less plants needed = less money spent
