Just moved house and about a few weeks ago the tree in our garden started growing red fruits that look very like cherries but I'm still not convinced they are cherries as the top isn't curvy and the are a little smaller

Hello Franky and welcome to the Vine. I have merged these two posts because they are asking the same and thing and it is easier for people to just answer one
Looks very much like my cherry tree, although yours looks much healthier than mine The red cherries don't seem to grow as big as the black ones you find in the supermarket.Last edited by scarey55; 10-07-2013, 07:57 PM.A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)

Welcome to the vine Franky. Looks like a cherry to me too. if the fruit doesn't look curvy yet, it's got some way to go before it's ripe, and if the tree doesn't get plenty of rain the cherries won't plump up like shop ones. Or it could be a wild cherry (gean) which only has small thin fleshed fruit, just enough to cover the seed really. or if it's a black cherry the fruit being red is still very under-ripe.
(I'm sure FB will be along shortly to put you straight anyway )Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
Endless wonder.

Looks like it might be a cherry to me too (especially considering its large size) - but I can't definitely make out the shape of the individual leaves because most of the leaves are at an angle to the camera while others are quite crowded and difficult to pick out from all the other leaves.
If not a cherry, it might be a cherry plum/myrobalan.
Of course, it's possible that the tree isn't even in the UK and it might be some kind of exotic plant.
Note to moderators: when new members sign-up to the Grapevine, can it be a compulsory part of the sign-up process that they list which region of the UK they live, so we can get an idea where they are and tailor advice more appropriately?Last edited by FB.; 10-07-2013, 08:49 PM..
