  • Jostaberry cuttings

I was at in laws today, and have snipped 3 cuttings from their jostaberry bush, currently sitting in water, any advice please, if they root, will they survive in pots for a while?

Yes, they'll be fine. They root very easily - I usually have a few sitting around in buckets. In fact I stick all my prunings into buckets of water.........

That's good to know - how long a piece do you cut off for rooting?

I cut pieces about 8/10 inches, we will see if they grow!

I use any prunings, usually about a foot long or more. Strip off the bottom leaves and put them in a bucket of water until they root or put them in the ground about 6-8" deep. Seems to work for all the currant bushes. I'm sure there's a best way to do it but.............

            Thank you.

My plant has only been in a year, it's about 3 feet tall -but I would like another for free!
I think I can find a piece about that long, let's hope it roots

Is it fruiting this year Thelma? I often cut out the branches that have fruited and root the new growth beyond the fruit (if that makes sense ) Jostaberries seem to grow enormous while your back is turned so you need to keep up the pruning.

No, I was hoping for a taster, at least - but not a one

I was just going to tip the branches, but there is one that has grown a lot, compared to the others, so I thought I'd prune that one to match. That would just give me one cutting that is long enough.

They also work from hardwood cuttings over the winter once the leaves have fallen. The technical term for yours is semi ripe cuttings.
All I might suggest which is not 100% necessary, is to nip off the leading shoot to leave about three leaves above the soil (water). Next year these will form branches which will give your plant more of a 'bush' shape, as apposed to the leader just growing up and forming a cordon.

This does depend on what shape you're aiming for tho.

If it is of any help, I have found jostaberries to be almost indestrucable. To the extent that a mass of prunings have rooted in the debris underneath them on a concrete patch. Also, a large bush (main stem about 4cm diameter) was transplanted, the rootball was split and both 'daughter' plants now growing nicely in new home....
I should think you will be fine whatever method you choose...
                    Cheers,
                    Adam
