  • Is it too late to plant any fruit this year?

I've a couple of spots that would seem to perfectly suit blueberry or currant bushes. Is it too late in the year to plant such things, either to fruit or simply to get established for next year?

I saw these are still delivered through the summer: Search results for instant impact soft fruit

Bigger plants ready to plant - anyone have any thoughts? I would not keep them in the pots, but re-plant them.

As far as I know, you can plant potgrown plants at any time

Potgrown fruit bushes can be planted at any time of year, but they will need careful ground preparation and a lot of watering to get them established.

There is no way I would pay those prices though

In my opinion you would be better to wait until the normal planting time for fruit bushes (winter to early spring)

How much should one be paying for fruit bushes then? I assume with those ones you pay extra to get a bigger plant...

I'm just tight Doug - I raise a lot of my own plants from seed and cuttings, or buy smaller plants.

It takes a bit longer to get to fruiting size, but as well as being cheaper I find the smaller plants tend to settle better.

Ah I see - I'm more into having stuff sooner than messing about with cuttings and so on Apart from lack of space, I'm more about the end result than the process (not that it isn't interesting, I just choose my time elsewhere).

Those plants do look expensive although they're offering 3 for the price of 2 so brings them down to about £10 each. You're unlikely to get fruit on any of them this year as most of them should be cropping now or soon - so realistically, you're talking about fruit for next year.
To be honest, when they say its in a 2 litre pot, I have no idea what size plant that would be I wish they'd say its say 2 feet tall and has 4 branches

Compared to the local B&Q it was good value, but that probably ain't saying much... I'll see if any local garden centre sells them first perhaps.

I do like to choose my own plants - not an anonymous one, dragged out of a pile, by a retailer and subjected to the rigours of the postal service.

I was pleasantly surprised how well my strawberries and fruit trees survived the post - the former were literally in a jiffy bag - but clearly it's going to depend on the supplier.

The fruit trees were a Groupon - 5 5-footers for £25 or so. They arrived in a cardboard tube as bare sticks and I was pretty dubious especially as nothing happened for a week or so, but they've all taken very nicely, lots of leaves and new branch growth of about 6 inches since planted a month back.

As for price (as I know little about anything else) I paid 12.99 or 9.99 for some 2 year loganberry tayberry and black currant bushes/plants in 3.5L pots and they were on 2 for 1 as well so £5-6.50 each from a local nursery in April and according to the tag they are from Blackmoor Nurseries they are all fruiting at the moment.
