Well it cut through quite easily ....wondering if it may be an unripe quince. Tried uploading the images for a google image search and one came up as a willow plate and the other showed a bloke just wearing a fig leaf

Lucky find, Bins That article is quite good if you want to pickle them.
"Near the end of June, specifically the 23 and 24th, is when the walnuts are traditionally harvested in Italy, although in the center of France, the walnuts are usually just right around the middle to the end of July. They’re perfect to use for liqueur-making when the walnut, and a slightly-crackly shell, is starting to form in the center."
Its a long time since I picked walnuts and I think they fell from the tree when ripe.......wait for an expert to come along

Ha! The squirrels usually get them! I have a lovely old tree and have only managed to collect a few before the squirrels get in first.
You can pickle them if you pick them green - before the shell starts to form inside, test with something sharp, usually June/maybe early July.
              For the nut - Sept/Oct

Oops! should have read all the post! It is too late for pickling, mine have already started forming a shell inside. Beware - They make your hands go very brown and it doesn't come off easily!
