I have mine in the ground, I scavenge leaves from Christmad trees in our recycling area in January, chop them all up and use them to mulch mine, as well as adding coffee grounds. They seem to like it.

A large pot with an acid mix is certainly the safer option, don't use normal compost mix, also don't use tap water, they really don't like it even once and keep them moist as well.
