  • Vine Pruning

I've always been a huge grape vine fan, though in previous years I've only ever cared for one smallish vine and I still consider myself a total beginner in their care. This year I've expanded and finally bought a good few, and now I'm starting to wonder about autumn and winter care. As a complete novice in pruning and winter care, I worry about keeping them healthy. Will the smaller vines need cold protection (in SE England) and do I need to prune them back as hard as the larger vines? Also when's the best time to get started on pruning? (At the mo it's still nice and sunny, so of course I'm in rush.)
    Thanks for any help,

    Ed

I always prune mine in the school Christmas holidays. My vine does very well on a south facing wall outside, I'm sure the younger vines will cope outside too.

That's a bit later than I guessed. That's great though. Thanks a lot.

The main pruning should be done in early winter, so November is probably the best time but as my kids are out of school usually a week before Christmas they get to help too!!

The main pruning should be done when the vine is dormant. In a greenhouse, I wait to Christmas.
