But it was totally neglected for most of the first 5 years . . in grass and brambles up to 5 ft ( and that was in winter) and the trees were no more than 3ft apart in the row in the field. The Kingston Black had been planted, grafted and cared for for the first year then the nursery owner became ill and died and the plantation was completely neglected until the trees were sold or bulldozed four years later. Digging it out wasn't easy, either, so it had a severe root-pruning when it came to a better place. I don't think we should propose that regime to the OP!

I guess the way I grow my trees "old fashioned-style", and the fact that everyone else apparently has average to good growing conditions (hence no need for any information on how to overcome challenging conditions) makes what I do meaningless to everyone else, so I'll keep quiet from now on.

I don't think that would be very welcome. Most people didn't chose their home or allotment because of its perfect growing conditions, they have to make the best of what they have and need to select their crops to suit their land and climate. Some are lucky but they might not be the ones asking questions on GYO forums. Your input is the main thing many posters want to know.

(It's purely a coincidence that both these cider apples had unusual early years.)

FB, I suspect your area has better sunlight hours than almost everyone else here, even if your soil conditions seem to be below average.

I hardly dare admit this, since as you know I'm a diehard dwarf tree enthusiast, but on the strength of some of your posts here I have actually ordered some MM111 apple trees for a little project this autumn!

Looks like I started a discussion since I last checked! I forgot to say we already have a mature apple tree in the front garden, we took some of the apples to the apple day at Blackmoor one year and they identified them as Newton Wonder

The back garden was extended before we bought the house, before it was farmland/paddocks.
