Found some damsons on side of a road. When's best time to pick them?

If they're on the road they're more than ready .........get em in some gin:-)

They're not on the road. they're still on bush on side of the road.

Give them a gentle squeeze, or taste one.

You can pick some underipe if you want to make chutney, pick a mixture though.

Er.....? What do they taste like? Never tasted damson before.

When they are ripe they will be sweet and taste a bit like plums. If they are not ripe they will be sour and leave a dry feeling in your mouth like sloes do. if they don't feel soft when you squeeze them they are not ripe. If they do feel soft, taste one, if it's sweet, pick them, if not they'll need another week or two to sweeten up. the ones in the hedges here still need another week I think.
