Melons

Going to be getting a freebie greenhouse for the lottie and as i grow all my toms, chillis, cucumbers etc at home in a 10 x 8 greenhouse, i was thinking of growing something a little more exotic or something different.

So melons was the first thing i thought of. They would be grown in the ground in the greenhouse but i really don't know much about them.

Any tips, ideas, suggestions, variety choices etc would be welcome.

Need 2 varieties for best pollination, may have to have a go at hand pollination as well.
I grew Alaska and it was good this year for the first time.
Another seed I tried but I planted too late was Minisotta Midget. Used the flowers to pollinate Alaska.

Bought mine from Moreveg - think you get 4 seeds per pack but at 50/60p thats fine and makes it inexpensive to have a go. A good thing for a first time. Pick 2 diferent ones and have a go. I did.


Need to apologise between 75p and 125p for 4 seeds.
Seems they have 12 varieties.

I grew them for the first time this year, little cantelope variety, Hand polinated and I am still waiting for them to ripen. Aubergines were goog though.

I'm going to try growing melons for the first time this year too. Never had a greenhouse before so I'm itching to try them out! I ordered some Galia melon seeds from T&M, and also some watermelon seeds that are supposed to be cold tolerant during the night. I have to say I'm not expecting to have much success with them but I should have fun trying!

The Galia melons are going to be grown in large pots so I can train them upwards because my greenhouse isn't that big, but the watermelons apparently need to spread out flat on the ground. That'll be interesting because the packet says they can spread out up to 4 meters.

The only problem I have is deciding how many seeds to sow. I don't want the melons to take up the entire greenhouse, but I also don't want to only sow one or two for them all to die.

I've had a few goes at growing melons in my greenhouses with mixed results. This year I tried Pepito (unwins seeds) and Orange Sherbet (unwins seeds). I got the seeds at the end of last summer in a sale for 50p a pack.

The Pepito have been amazing. So sweet and quite large.


the Orange Sherbet were okay, but not as large or sweet.
