  • Newbie : Cutting Raspberry canes

Hi everyone I'm a novice at growing any fruits but this year I have managed to grow loads of Raspberries , one bush is still giving me about 15 to 20 every other day. my canes are growing in large containers(gorilla buckets). I know that I need to cut them down at some point but unsure as to when and how much /how low.
I would also very much appreciate advice on what to do with a Blueberry bus acquired this year , I have had some fruits from it and it has grown quite a bit, again this is in a large gorilla bucket, it seems very happy and thriving but does it need pruning and is it ok to leave outside through winter.

Raspberry canes which have fruited need to be cut right down to the ground. The old brown canes will be probably dying back now anyway. If you have Summer fruiting raspberries there will be some green canes which will give you fruit next season. Don't cut these out! However if they are very overcrowded you could cut a few out. If you have Autumn fruiting raspberries then you will find you are cutting down all the canes and new ones will grow in the spring to fruit late next Summer and into the Autumn.
They would appreciate a good mulch of well rotted manure or compost especially in their restricted growing space. Just make sure the soil is nice and moist beforehand.
Sorry can't help you with blueberries but someone who does will be along no doubt.

Blueberry's fruit on 2 and 3 year old wood the best, so don't prune them unless it is to get a specific shape.

What name of raspberry's just in case they are odd.
Usually when they have fruited heavily on a cane that is their main production on it. Just best to know the variety then it is safer to say prune or leave.
