Dwarf apple & pear trees in a planter/pot?

Hi,

Fairly new to gardening etc, as just bought our first house and looking to improve the garden!

Looking at getting a dwarf apple tree and a dwarf pear tree and wondered whether these could be planted in a planter tub or not?

If so what would be the recommended depth and width of the required area for either tree - planters are not a problem as I'll knock something up to suit once I've an idea of suitable sizes!

Dwarf or even semi-dwarf rootstocks are suitable for large containers (the size of half a barrel, so about 40-60cm in depth and width).
However, dwarfs need fertile soil (compost - changed every second or third winter), sometimes additional feeding and regular watering to produce a worthwhile crop.
