  • Apple identification

    Hello,

I purchased an apple tree a couple of years ago as a Katy, and it has just produced two apples this year.

I don't think it's a Katy, can anyone give me any idea as what the variety could be?

I have just eaten the second apple today and it has a light flavour, with almost no sharpness. The apple is wider than high measuring 2 3/4 inches across by 2 1/4 inches high. It was grown in my garden in mid Wales, was free from disease and is almost completely green. I did notice that the tree had an unusually attractive blossom and the leaves were hairier than other apple trees I have.

Quick glance through a book of pictures and a few look possible:
Grenadier, Rev W Wilks,, Cats Head and Limelight would seem to be the best match. Just totally based on matching up pictures.
Limelight seems to be a fair match.
Harvest time for it is Sept to November so matches you picking it.

Croeso Julian from South Wales. Can't help with your apple identification though - I'm struggling with some of my own!
Where did you buy it? Can they help?

Thanks for your replies and welcome messages, I bought the tree online, but I am not sure who the supplier is now as I bought quite a few trees from different suppliers. Most of my new trees have not done very well and have either produced no fruit or just very small fruits, and even though some have been planted for six years now they have barely grown an inch a year! All my fruit trees were on either mm106 rootstocks, or quince A for pears (the pear trees all died) and I have recently replanted on larger rootstocks, mm111 and m25 etc. The mm111 I have found hard to obtain even though it seems like the best rootstock.

My mystery apple tree, which does look a lot like Limelight is one of the few trees that has grown and produced fruit, I was disappointed at first when I saw the green fruits developing, as I was expecting a Katy, and thought I had a sharp cooking apple instead. On tasting the apples I was surprised how good they were, as they taste much better than they look, and is one of the best apples I have grown. I will be looking forward to them next year!
