  • Patio fruit trees

I bought 3 'mini' type fruit trees earlier this year, plum, cherry and apple, was the offer from the mag, Thompson and Morgan. Planted in pots as instructions etc. they have grown to approx 3. Foot, and are ok ish, but not brilliant, they are on my lower patio, which is next to road, so not many bees/insects etc? Am thinking of taking up to allotment? Would this be a good idea?

    Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't take these trees up to an allotment, unless I was going to transplant them into open ground, mainly because they would be easier to care for on a regular basis (e.g. summer watering) if they were in a sunny position outside my door. It's probably too early in their lives to determine whether or not they are going to be pollinated effectively in their current position, but if it's not a really busy road the location shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you, I was thinking of planting in open ground, you think they are best left in pots, I'll maybe see how they get on next year then. They just look a bit 'spindly' , hopefully they will be a bit leafier next year.

Dorothy I'd always thought that any tree was better of in the ground, it means more space to spread their roots.
        Location....East Midlands.
