I have just treated myself to a fig tree and have been told its best grow it in a pot? How big should the pot be? Also any other tips would be much appreciated. Can't wait to sample my first fig!

Didn't it come with aftercare and growing instructions? How big is it at the moment, what size pot is it in, and whereabouts are you?

All the above will affect any advice given.

Keep it in a small pot, only pot on when it looks like it is splitting the pot, only increasing the pot size to the next size up and trim back any roots that come out of the bottom. Water when the soil is dry, better to water every day if needed than stand it in a saucer of water, feed every month.
I have three plants each about 30 inches high, in six inch pots, growing in a greenhouse and I get a succession of fruit ripening from late spring to late autumn, normally one or two a week from the three plants. They are four years old from cuttings, plants the same age growing outside in larger stone pots are growing well but not fruiting.

put the pots somewhere sheltered, like a cold greenhouse, to prevent it getting too much rain in winter and put back outside in may and as said feed monthly til end of sept, it works for us up here...

No, no aftercare instructions. It is about 25cm and came in a 3L pot. I am in Sheerness, North Kent.
            Thanks

I would keep it in the pot it's in for the winter and re-pot in Spring. If you add your location to your profile it will show on your posts for future reference.

and use john innes compost No3 when repotting not mpc as it wont hold on to the nutrients that the plant needs...good luck with it..

If you do plant direct into ground, plant it in an old washing machine drum.....
