  • Horse manure and strawberries

Whilst I was tidying my strawberry bed someone said I should put horse manure on it. Is this a good idea and can I use fresh manure or would I be better to use rotted manure?

Definitely don't use fresh manure, and I probably wouldn't use any sort of manure round strawberries. I don't find that they need it.

Thanks Rusty, I had heard of using straw before but not manure.

You are probably right. Manure berries don't sound quite as appealing

You usually put straw around the strawberries after flowering to stop the fruits getting splashed by rain or to stop them sitting on wet ground. It just gives the fruits a bit of protection.

Good timing! I was mowing around my strawberries and inspecting the fruits this morning. Wasn't planning on putting any manure, or even manure tea on them, since eating them is my plan.
