Raspberry canes - how many & are eBay canes ok...?

I've now removed my autumn bliss as the 3 potted plants I put in 2 years ago were taking over a bit, sending up runners 3-4ft away

Before I planted my raspberries I prepared a decent trench, then placed old lino along the sides and ends, giving a 2 foot wide bed. Hopefully when the canes start to show, they will only appear where I want them and not elsewhere.

The lino idea might not work, I had some and just thought it would be a thicker barrier for the roots than thick plastic.

Thanks everyone, that explains what the litres malarkey is about. Been having a look on Blackmoor and think I might delve into 10 canes from them, and try the Autumn Bliss still. If it is as good a grower as people seem to be saying, then that'd be awesome... Fingers crossed it doesn't go too crazy though!

I've bought from e-bay and have been really pleased with the results. A lot of reputable nurseries use e-bay to compete in the modern internet-world. A lot have their own (non-ebay) websites that you can visit. Look for a lot of good feedback.

Have you asked around for spare canes? They will come from an established source and you will have a really good idea of what you are getting. Good luck.

Thanks cDave. I haven't asked around as there doesn't tend to be many people up on the site when i'm up, plus i don't really know anyone there Maybe next year i'll be able to play swapsies with folk!

I've just bought and planted 4 raspberry canes of Malling Promise from poundland at £1 per cane. Three out of four had roots and two had young shoots emerging inside the packaging. The canes were well packaged and originated from The Netherlands. Three of them 'looked' as good in terms of attached roots as canes I've received this winter from two specialist nurseries at twice the price. However, I'm going to buy a few more and see how they do before singing their praises. Malling Promise isn't a particularly disease resistant variety and most varieties I've tried succumb to root rot within a few years in my soil.

That's interesting.
In the same soil where my MM106 apples often succumb to crown/root rot, my raspberries are very healthy and very vigorous too - a single cane of Autumn Bliss would have no trouble smothering and killing a fruit tree on the very vigorous M25 rootstock.
