Strawberry thieves

Went down to my council allotment yesterday to collect the strawberry plants I potted up into 2 ltr pots in the autumn. I had potted up 24 plants but there were only 14. The plot has a six ft surrounding fence. On close inspection, I found that right at the end of the fence, the staples had been removed to gain access. If anyone wanted some plants, I would happily have given them some. Pretty pi**ed off at the moment.

You need a mild deterent, such as 8ft deep bear traps with sharpened bamboo spikes.
Somehow allotments and gardens seem to be considered fair game to some thieves, in our care home the senior carer used to boast how she sent her kids down the lottie on Saturday nights to pick veg for their sunday dinner. When I mentioned that that was stealing someone elses hard work she looked puzzled and said "Its only vegetables". Three out of five of her children have served prison sentences, I wonder if that might be connected to the example she set them when young.

It does puzzle me sometimes, wheres the enjoyment in growing something you stole!?

if you really shop around strawberry plants - on ebay - 10 for £1..

saying that..someone once pinched two bricks off my plot..

We had two beautiful hanging baskets stolen from the front of our care home!!!!Thats almost as bad as stealing them off someones grave. We also had an entire set of wicker patio furniture stolen and many pot plants. A doule ladder and other stuff. In the end I had to bolt pots to the ground.Although I was so worried the poor thief might get a hernia trying to lift them It's mostly drug addicts who do this just to get a fix.

Report it at least to the committee at the site. And the police. I know people don't think it's worth bothering the police with minor allotment thefts, but every crime should be reported - and it might not just be pots of strawberries pinched.

The remaining pots removed and transported to my new allotment. There are plenty in the Council plot to replace the stolen ones but the whole idea of potting up runners was to be able to move them to the new plot with as little disturbance as possible. Moving plants out of the ground and transplanting them is a lot more stressful for the plant than moving them from a pot into the ground.

Still flemmin annoyed but not spitting feathers any more. Life's too short.

To add insult to injury, discovered today that one of my barrows has gone walkabout as well. Of course it had to be the one that didn't have a slow puncture. I now have this picture in my mind of someone walking along the street with my barrow containing 10 x 2ltr pots with my strawberry plants in.

Plot 12 broken into recently, ditto plots 4 and 10. I had some paving slabs nicked last year. Wasn't so ticked off at the theft. I left the slabs outside my plot so in a sense they were fair game but I'd dragged them uphill out of the plot ready to remove . Council pleads it doesn't have the funds to provide perimeter fencing. Just don't leave anything lying about. What plot you been allocated?

When you say those plots were broken into, was it the sheds or the plot itself? any damage done?
