Hi guys,
I planted a maiden cherry tree in the autumn. It lives in a large (100l) container for now, until I find a more permanent place for it. It has got two side branches, both of which have got buds on them so I presume they are (or were!) healthy. However when I checked up on it this morning I noticed that the bark on one of the side branches has split, appr. 6cm long, in the middle of the branch. I can peel the bark back a little bit but the wood is still fairly soft, i.e. it doesn't feel like a dead branch.
My question is, really, why is my tree doing this and is it a problem? Should I prune the branch back and just wait for new side branches to develop over the course of the year?
I will add some pictures as soon as the battery on my camera has charged up.
Edited to add: I've now added some pictures. Sorry about them not being very clear but it's the best my old camera can do! It's a 'Sunburst' cherry tree on Gisella 5 rootstock.
