Strawberrys. - how do you grow yours?

I have several strawberry runners in pots awaiting new homes but I'm not sure where to plant them. Where do you find they grow best? Ground, raised bed, pots, hanging baskets etc?

I had mine in a two tier planter with coir liner last year, and it was a royal pain in the padded area to keep them watered. The harvest was not bad, but some of them went woody as I just couldn't keep them hydrated. Watering them before going to work, immediately on getting back, and once again in the evening was insufficient.

This year I'm starting again from seed, and have bought 2 of the 80 litre Apollo strawberry tubs. Once they are sited I will be putting blue, black and giant red varieties (I'm allergic to being normal ) on the faces that will get enough sun, and wild white alpines on the shaded sides.

The build quality is rather suspect on these tubs, but for the price they'll do. I also intend going over some of the key suspect areas with the hot glue gun before planting up

Mine are in the ground at the allotment and do really well - not that many make it home.

In pots on my patio, south facing, they do really well.

Oh forgot ,do have some alpines in pots, did ok ish, but am going to upgrade them to bigger pots.

...oh and a bit of water really does help!!

They are pretty hardy..don't fuss over them too much- there are other fruit /veg which would benefit more from your attention!

Strawberries of all types are best in the ground (or if your soil is poor: in raised beds with occasional watering) where their roots are free to search for water and nutrients; strawberries are hungry and thirsty plants.

In pots they need lots of watering and regular compost changes - and in pots they can be badly affected by vine weevil larvae eating their roots (the larvae look like curled-up maggots and can reach a couple of centimetres in length).
