For clarification, that's a Brown Turkey in a pot in Yorkshire
The idea is to cut the tip off to stop the plant putting energy into growing but to push out the breba crop (crop on last years wood) and also make more new buds, so to answear your question you want to take the tips off before it breaks dormancy. Also the idea to pinch after 4-5 leaves does two things, 1 it keeps the tree/bush compact and 2, it makes the main crop figs produce faster.
    Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll bear all that in mind when I unwrap it. Obviously it's been a few months since I last saw it

Great post I have a fig.....I think Brown Turkey and is in the region of 4 yrs old. Is in a container and never really done a lot...do feed and water and a fresh layer of potting compost each spring but have found it tends to drop its fruits really quite early....there's something I'm not doing....will try some of the tips posted

Some varieties drop there breba crop (crop on last years wood) and focus on there main crop. This is not a problem if you live in the med where you have a extended growing season, but unfortunately here in the U.K we don't really have that luxury.
It could also be related to being a young tree, or water stress,

            How big is your tree?
            How big is the container?
How long has it been in the container?

If the breba dropping is a trait with your variety the only real option is to remove them and focus on main crop figs.

They are really easy to grow and take cuttings from. I have about 6 plants now from my original Brown turkey, now a standard and in an old water tank ,outdoors all year round. One of the cuttings is in my greenhouse with loads of fruit and will be moved outside in summer. I used JI no 3 compost which is for plants that will be in pots for long time. No1 is more for young plants. All to do with the amount of nutrients I think.
