Raspberry care

Hi,

I've just moved to a new house and there are some raspberry canes in the garden. Some are showing new growth along their whole length, while others appear to be dead. Can anyone advise the best way to look after these so I can get a nice crop in summer/autumn? Also, how do I tell if they are summer or autumn fruiting varieties?

Cut the dead canes down to the ground, and leave the ones with shoots forming.

Sounds like summer fruiting raspberries.

I'd go with summer ones too as all the canes on Autumn ones would be looking dead at this time of year.

Summer fruiting raspberries grow and fruit on a two year cycle.

New canes grow in the Spring / Summer of year one.

These canes bear fruit in the Summer of year two, while more new canes are growing.

Trimmed and re-staked these this morning, thanks for the advice! Would a dressing of manure/chicken manure pellets at this point be of any benefit?

Bario1, I hope you don't mind me posting on your thread, it seemed to make sense to keep the raspberry questions together.

I am growing raspberries for the first time this year and have bought a pack of 3 canes, one of each of early, mid and late varieties.

I have a space about 2m long and 30cm wide in which to plant them, but the first metre of the plot will get more sunshine than the second metre. Which variety should I plant in the sunniest spot, the early, mid or late?

Also, I was going to plant them as far apart as possible because I have heard that raspberries give out new canes as time goes by. Is this the best way to do things, or can I buy 3 more canes instead and plant them 30cm apart?

Only buy new canes if they're a different variety. Otherwise, increase your stock for free by digging up suckers in a couple of years

30cm is far too close: they need to be 2-3ft apart from each other

Thanks. I actually planted them yesterday, the summer fruiting ones are in one part of the garden (about 45 cm apart, Thompson and Morgan said 30 cm but I guessed the distance), and the autumn fruiting one is down the bottom of the garden next to a new loganberry bush. No going back now so I'll just have to wait and see!

Excuse me, I think you'll find we have more sunlight hours on average than anywhere else in Britain....

Hahaha I was just about to challenge that one! Torquay has won the hours of sunshine award on and off for years. (Not just daylight but actual sunshine)
