I just wanted to post some advice for anyone new to growing raspberries (like me). I recently bought a pack of three raspberry canes, two are summer fruiting and one is autumn fruiting. My original plan was to plant all three canes in my garden border, adjacent to my bush beans. After doing some research, I found out the following:
1. It is not a good idea to plant summer and autumn fruiting raspberries next to each other because they send up new shoots, often quite a way away from the original cane. So after some time they will all get mixed up and pruning will be very difficult because summer and autumn varieties get pruned at different times.
2. Raspberries can take over if you're not careful, so I need to be careful putting them next to my veg patch!
Now I have found all of this out, my plan is to put the summer fruiting varieties in the border, but place some sort of border in the soil (e.g. a piece of wood) between the raspberries and the beans, to stop the raspberries taking over. The autumn fruiting cane will go on its own in a pot, hopefully it won't look too sad and lonely!
Hope that helps someone :-)
