Espalier pear tree.

I have bought an espalier pear tee, variety Beth, with the intention of planting it behind my garage, a perfect site! Sadly what I didn't realise was that there is a dirty great land drain right where it would need to be planted, so back to the drawing board. Have an alternative site, next to our stone garden shed, but there is not a great depth of soil, very rocky about a foot to 18 inches down. What do you think? Is this going to be deep enough for a smallish espalier tree? The building is only a single storey so the tree will not be allowed to become very large.

I'd give it a go. I have a couple of quasi-espalier trained conference pear trees growing happily in 12 inches of soil over a cracked tarmac surface. One is a whopper at 15 years old, fruits pretty well, and I'm pretty sure its roots have made their way to where they need to be.

Thanks for that, I have cleared out the area next to the shed and planted the tree. Fingers crossed it likes it there. Now what to do with the plants I've had to take out - I think I'm going to be spending some time potting!
