Anyone forcing rhubarb?

I dug up a mahooosive rhubarb plant from the front of my plot in late Jan. I put most of it on the swap bench, but took 4 good chunks for myself to raise some new plants, one of which I put a bucket over and picked the first pale pink stems at the weekend for a crumble.

Don't know what anyone else thingks, but it has a very different taste, lower acidity and very little sugar. On adding a little sugar it tasted almost bittersweet, quite different to normal rhubarb and rather interesting.

First time I've forced rhubarb but will do it again next year (to a different plant).

Hope your plant survives . . . after division it's good practice to give the plant a year off from cropping to let it re-establish and build itself back up, it's just undergone a huge trauma by being chopped up into pieces.

I really don't need to, the rhubarb patch I inherited when I moved here is absolutely crowded already! It is in a very sheltered but sunny spot so I'd guess that that, plus the very mild winter, has caused it to grow so quickly. But what to do with all this rhubarb... Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed your crumble!

we have 13 crowns so we crop them ,cook the rhubarb and drain off the excess juice before each tub goes into the freezer, this is then frozen in tubs so that we normally don't have to buy any breakfast juices, we are just near running out now as last summer didn't start til june and ended at the end of august around here.....just enjoy it whatever you do..
