  • Fertilizing Raspberry Canes

We are new gardeners and have just taken on an allotment and inherited some raspberry canes. We have been told to fertilize with pelleted chicken manure but are not sure how to go about this. Do we just scatter around the base of the plant? Do we dig it in? Do we mix with compost and place around the base of the plant?

I have only just found this website but I think I may be a frequent flyer!!

Scatter round the root area of the plants and gently rake it in. Be careful you don't damage any new shoots that may be forming though.

I don't feed my rasps at all, really. They occasionally get a mulch of a few comfrey leaves, but that's it

I would just scatter them around the raspberry's and leave them, for a while at least.
They are solid lumps and until they get rained on, and break up a bit, you could end up raking them all into one location. Well that is what happens to me.

If you rake then be careful of the plants, they have shallow roots and if raking vigerously it will be easy to damage them.
