Raspberry canes

Hi all

I planted a pot bought raspberry autumn bliss. Half the canes were cut to ground level and half were about 15 inch tall. One of the tall ones has lot of growth and I can see some flowers coming on it, however the other canes are showing no growth at all, any ideas what's gone wrong? Should I leave them? Take them out?

Autumn Fruiting varieties, like Autumn Bliss, will throw up suckers (usually by now, but for newly planted they will be a bit late in the first season), and it is those new shoots that will carry the fruit in the late Summer.

Bit of a toss up for newly planted, I would leave the existing canes alone to provide some leaf, and energy, for the plant to grow, but I suspect the By-the-book method is to cut the canes down to the ground and just go with the suckers

I would just leave them alone for this year and enjoy any fruit that you get.

I would think that the ones that aren't showing growth yet are Autumn fruiting and may take a while to get going.

I planted Autum bliss 18 months ago along with Polka and some summer raspberries. They all had short canes which I decided to leave as I thought would be better than cutting them down whilst they established themselves. I got a mixture of new and old canes. I cut them all down at the end of the year. Lots of new canes this year so leaving them as they came worked for me.

I may well be wrong but I expect the longer canes were left for an early fruit.
We don't do it, we cut all our autumn (primocane) raspberries right down to the ground, or near to the ground at the end of the season. The books will say in late autumn but we don't usually do ours until feb(ish).
If you leave an autumn raspberry over the winter without cutting, it will fruit earlier (like a summer raspberry- floricane)but less heavily- many people leave some of their autumn raspberries half cut to extend the season like this but I don't see the point unless space is a real issue-grow summer fruiting as well.

I would let it go for this year and then cut to the ground at the end of the season- as it's pot grown you may get an early flush from the taller ones but don't expect too much. The lower cut ones may catch up but I always think that you buy fruit for the following year not the planting year.

Yes it does thank you I wasn't expecting any fruit this year but just thought it strange that one long cane has loads of growth while the other that was the same has none
