  • Bought a couple of raspberry plants

On a bit if a whim at £3 each. Potted, each is a single spiny cane 2 feet high with a little clump of leafy shoots at the tip. I never grew raspberries before and when I Google IT talk's about clumps of canes. How will my plants develop over time and do I plant as-is?

    Thanks!

It's rather late to plant raspberry for a crop next year. Summer Raspberry fruit on the previous years canes. What usually happens is you plant in mid to late winter, during spring some new canes develop from runners under the ground, the following year these fruit and are cut back after fruiting in the autumn. Your problem is that the plant hasn't time now to develop runners and canes for next year. It could be a couple of years before you get some fruit at this stage.

What variety of raspberry is it? That will determine whether it is an Autumn or Summer fruiting type and how it crops. In time your one cane will develop into a clump. Get them planted as soon as you can, leaving a foot or so between each pot. How many pots did you buy?

I only have 2, no idea how much fruit one plant can yield? We just have a narrow bit at the end of the new bed so I figured might as well try them out. Most of what we are planting won't fruit in earnest for a bit anyway, it'll be nice to watch though.

Just an update. I got a third plant just after posting. Over the next 2 months all 3 sent up at least one new cane and are thriving... They flowered and each fruited in total perhaps 6 very nice fruit. Very optimistic for next year!

You'll be overrun with them in a couple of years time

I planted one single autumn raspberry out last summer and it is romping away this year, got up to 7 ft tall and spreading in all directions! Loads of raspberries.
