This afternoon, I ate an apple, and when I cut and cored it, I found several seeds already germinated. the roots were about a centimetre long. I have planted the seeds in a pot on the kitchen window sill. The apple was a Pink Lady and not over-ripe for eating. it was still crisp and tasted perfect.

My dad once had this happen. He planted the seedling and got a decent apple tree. However, before it fruited he had to cut it down because he wanted to build a garage. Couldn't see that it was like murdering your kids! The only problem is you won't get the variety you planted. On the up-side (I like up-sides!) you could call it Hanadr's Pippin or some such. To be serious, if you wanted to, you could get a dwarfing rootstock from a tree nursery and graft it on so the thing wouldn't take over your garden like a triffid.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Another advantage of grafting your little seedling in a year or so would be that you should get fruit much sooner!
As said before you probably won't get a pink lady tree as the friut was probably open polinated and what you get may not be worth growing as it may not produce a worthwhile or even edible crop - but fun to try!
I have heard of tomatoes germinating in this way before but not apples. Is it becomming more common? And is this a reflection on how the crops are raised?
TerryThe weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
