  • Blackcurrant bushes - any info

Does anyone know any tips about growing blackcurrants? Any information gratefully received!

Plant 'em let 'em grow an prune out some of the old wood when they are 3yrs old. Works for me!

You need to protect from birds when the berries start to ripen, arrived to find my bushes were Parakeet City one day, every berry gone!
Netting ON bushes not a great idea, too hard to untangle without damage, I use long canes with netting secured at corners

Fairly easy to grow, they fruit on old wood so do not prune heavily then expect fruit.
Easy to propogate new one, take a nice looking twig and stick it into a pot of compost, they are fairly happy to grow roots and so another plant.

If I recall advice is to plant so that the crown is just below the ground, but check up on that as it doesn't seem to tie in with other thoughts.

Really comes down to which blackcurrant after that.

In my limited experience they grow like mad whatever but the ants farm aphids all over them and the leaves curl up (have given up doing anything about it) but they just carry on growing.
