  • Strawberry bending/snapping

Hi all, hopefully you can help. I planted some strawberries in a tiered planter earlier in the year and the strawberries are now in full swing!!
However, due the weight of the strawberries the plant seems to be bending and getting damaged on the edge of the planter. Did I plant them too close to the edge? Is it worth replanting? Or will they be ok?

    Thanks in advance!!

Hi, to be honest, if your planting them to hang they need to b close to the edge to stop the bend happening, they will still ripen and grow, just pick the fruit as soon as it's ripe to ease the weight, it's to late move them now, they will have got a good grip, just plant the runners closer when they reach, ready for next year, hope it helps......

Could you "soften" the edge with something like foam pipe insulation so that the hard edge isn't cutting into the stalk.

Good idea VC, I'll try to put some bubble wrap or similar around the edge tomorrow (the heavens have just opened and it's looking to be a nice storm already)

Thanks for the advice stevie, I'll make sure the runners are closer for next year!!

Next year I would plant them so that the crown of the plant is under the top bar, on their sides. Also a couple in the centre so it doesn't look bare. Some sphagnum moss wrapped round the top edge looks much nicer than bubble wrap.
