Need ideas/methods for strawberry runners

I know how you SHOULD propogate runners from your strawberry plants, but in my circumstances this won't work.

From what I can find on the net, all the info is based on establishing the nodes by stapling down until they have developed sufficient roots to sustain them before separating them from the parent plant. But what about those who are growing strawberries in an elevated position?

Many of the runners on my barrel planters do not reach to the ground, or to anywhere I can put a smaller pot, and the same goes for anyone growing in hanging baskets of wall planters. I have transferred 6 nodes to plots after snipping from the plant, and of course they have started to wilt. I'm taking a chance that they might actually sprout enough root to sustain themself before expiring, much the same as with taking a cutting from a plant. Is there another prescribed way for propagating runners that are separated from the mother plant first?

Double them back and poke them in the soil next to the mother plant. Once they've rooted, cut the "cord" and pot them on to their own place.

I haven't ever tried it but I think you should be able to do it in a small plastic bag with compost in it. Fill the bag with compost and pop the runner in, close the bag around the stem. They don't take long to root.

If you can't curl them back to the main barrel, wait until the plantlets have roots starting to form before snipping them off, then either put in a jar of water to grow on the roots, or pot up and keep well watered.



If the ones you have done had little roots starting to form, chances are they will perk up and start to grow after an initial wilt. Put them in a shady place until they start to make more leaves.

Someone on our plot presented me with a load of unrooted runners that he'd detached from the parent plant saying he always did it this way, as it was easier and he always had success. I wasn't convinced but I potted them up, kept them moist and put them in the shade. After wilting for a bit they eventually all perked up and did just fine.
