Strawberry questions.

I am changing all my strawberries this year. My question is what variety do other people recommend and what is the best way to but them and when?

I took a lot of runners last year and let them crop, I know it is said it's best not to do that but pinch off the flowers the first year, however I had a good crop and the plants look big and healthy so why not?

I have Cambridge favourite and honeyoe. First year this year and had lots of big juicy sweet fruit also loads of runners from each plant

Rapsody are good, vigorous, and tasty and I like Elsanta as they're prolific. I have honeyo from seed this year which are nice. Mara de bois were disappointing and tasteless, pineberrys fun but just not the same.

As you are in the south-west, you could try Gariguette, a French variety grown mainly in Brittany where we are, so very similar climate. They fruit very early (May/June), but are easily the tastiest strawberries I've ever had, with rather beautiful elongated fruits. Their arrival each year is a big event in the markets here, they are very popular, a gourmet strawberry! We bought 6 small organic plants to start off this year, not having high expectations for the first year, but they all produced a handful of fruit and now loads of runners which we have potted up to expand the patch for next year.

I grow Cambridge Favourite and have found it to be a reliable cropper with a good flavour.

I have Elsanta which i got from my local Homebase...they're vigorous and sweet.

Ive also grown a later variety called Florence. I got 36 bare root small plants (runners basically) from ebay for £10 + post. They've grown like mad and had a few delicious fruits this year.

so if you have access to it, look on ebay and maybe just pot the plants up for now before planting properly in autumn.
