I have clear resin like blobs on my plums, any idea what causes them? Are the plums edible?

You could eat the resin, but it is preferable to wipe it off before eating/cooking the plums. Plums produce resin/jelly often, in response to physiological stresses, diseases and localised pest attacks/wounds, directed at the skin, flesh or stone. I'm no expert on plant pathology and plant defence responses, but I imagine that the jelly has some protective/healing qualities, amongst other functions for the plant.

This season seems to have been particularly bad in terms of resin/jelly production on plums in my area (probably associated with the early season and its accompanying slightly odd weather pattern). Some plums produce it from the tip/end of the fruit, whilst others produce from all over the skin. In cases of mild resin production, if you cut the fruit up you can often find no damage. These cases may have been caused by transient environmental stresses earlier in the fruit's development. However, profuse resin sometimes occurs when you've got a plum maggot or other pest/disease infection, with something wiggly or gooey lurking inside. In these cases I usually cut the fruit open to check, before eating it.
