I have some strawberry seeds that I got from the HSBC bank they were giving them away to coincide with wimbledon. Can I sow them now or should I wait till next year?
Thanks.
Dogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderful
Sow them now, It's what nature would do. I've grown some plants from seed but I won't do it again. The trouble is the genetic variety between seeds. Proffesional runners are from plants that have been carefully chosen and bred over a number of years for taste, look and vigor. Mine are just weird, some taste like sick, some tast nice but look awfull, some have a funny colour. I'm sticking to runners from now on. Also, they grow VERY slowly and germination will be poor at best. Good Luck though!
Thanks for that. I got these seeds from the HSBC bank, they were giving them away to coincide with Wimbledon. The were packed individually in little cardboard strips of 10 with a bubble at the end with seed in it, a bit like the packs of matches you used to get. I have put them in modules and will see. I also sowed some giant strawberry seeds earlier this year and have about 14 plants that have come on really well. No idea what they will taste like but they are meant to be about the size of a large apple.
I'd sow them now too.
Let them get going and keep them in a greenhouse over winter so that they'll start of the spring in good strength.
I have a set of strawberry plants that are just over a year old now and they get a good feed every 10 - 14 days.
They produced quite well this year but I think their best crop will come next year.
The strawberry's it produced were really large and tasted very sweet.
Definitely looking forward to what it can do for next year.
