lifes a peach

we started on our own peaches today and the taste is really superb, we only got 13 as we were away at germination time so the flies/bees did some for us and a really good size ,bigger than the shop ones and we will have the apricots fruiting next year after its training is done this year...here is a peculiar statement for you all.. " we are in Scotland and could do with some rain".....

we got the rain and the peaches are sitting in the sun getting tastier, and weighing half as much again as some that the wife brought home (she forgot), and now we are picking blueberries that have now quickly changed colour after I watched them for weeks with no result, and the minute you turn your back they are ripe ,but I am not complaining , its our first proper crop of them from the three bushes..

We are lucky enough to have a large Peach in the back garden. The first year, it had a couple of fruit, but I didn't know what it was until too late and the Wasps had taken over. Last year we had about thirty enormous fat lush peaches off it - in fact, I think there is still some in the freezer.

This year the fruits are smaller, but there must be over a hundred on there, and they're ripening fast!

What am I missing with apricots? A lot of you seem to grow them but I think they are pretty tasteless, or is that cos I buy shop bought ones, do homegrown apricots taste much different to bought? Having said that I guess that there is a huge taste difference in most shop bought fruit/veg than the stuff you grow at home. I do like nectarines and peaches, can anyone tell me if they taste better homegrown?

Yes. Definitely. I know a Lady with an Apricot in her greenhouse. The fruits are lovely. I think it is due to the fact that most shop-bought fruits are artificially ripened.

we can let them ripen properly where the shop ones have to be picked early so they get to the shop at the correct ripeness, so the sugars don't get the chance to develop properly, but you need a plant in a pot up here or a great summer(here that's 1 in 10/12yrs) so I now have 2 greenhouses and next year the peach will have to share with the new apricot bought from a "range" shop 2yrs ago and now with a good branch system needed for the fruit to develop....cant wait..

the buds are starting to swell on the peach and apricot despite the bitterly cold weather so all I seem to do is keep looking to see any signs of the buds swelling, i can still remember how good last years peaches were....

I spoke to a guy at the Dundee Flower and Food festival last year who says if you're feeling ambitious and have a South-facing wall then you could give peaches a bash. He's heard of a guy in Glasgow who has a lovely peach. Have a look on his website "Appletreeman". I think he stocks Peregrine. It's on my wishlist for next year.

my peach is a red haven from aldi @ £3.99 about 5/6yrs ago and it really does produce well up here, it sits in the greenhouse until after fruiting when I move it outside until the frosts, the 2 windows are permanently open in the greenhouse as the peaches don't mind the cold its the constant rain they hate. it has been quite happy even after winters of weeks of -13 to -16degs, at the prices asked (the cost of one or two pints) you will not lose out as long as it has some cover so good luck..

There is at least one variety that would hopefully do well in Scotland I would imagine its called avalon pride.

I'm growing Nectarines (in containers) because family tell me they don't rate Apricots or Peaches by comparison ... they are basing that on supermarket-bought of course ...

STOP!!! I'm now looking at Aprium Cot n Candy and Pluot Flavor King. Where did you get yours from Kristen? I can't seem to find anyone selling Flavor King in the UK.

I have three peaches. A Red Haven which I grow outside in a pot, Saturn and Amber, again in pots but in a cold greenhouse. I've only had the Red Haven 18 months and the other two are recent acquisitions.

I'm waiting to see if the Red Haven will be a successful fruiter outdoors (we shall see) but it has done well in growth last year and didn't suffer from peach leaf curl. I have high(ish) hopes it will do OK.
